Certificate Course in Project Management at Institute of Management Studies, University of Peshawar

A poor soul I am!

After teaching a couple of courses in 'Project Management', I started talking about the importance of the subject to Business and Public Administration students to the administration of Institute of Management Studies. I could not convince them of having two courses on the subject in the curriculum or alternatively none. But, they introduced quite an extensive certificate course in 'Project Management'. Off course,  I was to design it and deliver it. I had a plan to prepare for the PMP test, but had to let it go in order to take the new challenge. The idea of designing a 96 hours course spread over four months, and the opportunity to share my experience and resources, was quite fascinating.

Designing of the course was a challenge in its own respect. You have to take a person with a little or no knowledge of 'Project Management', move him/her across the contents of the course, and finally enable him to be a good project team member with necessary knowledge and skills. Yet, on the other side, you have to feed the experienced participants with valuable and useful information that can help them in their practice of project management. Initially I thought that the duration of the course would be enough. But I felt it to be insufficient to satisfy both types of participants. So I decided to augment these hours with almost double of it in the form of a number of links to free online and authentic resources. The philosophy was 'you want to learn more! Here are the resources that I have used and you can benefit from'.

The course is fundamentally based on 'A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge' (fourth edition). The approach is based on learning and skills development rather than a quick prep for PMP exam. I would consider my self successful if the participant learn from the course, improve their practice of 'Project Management', and get prepared for CAPM and PMP certifications from PMI. A number of different types of teaching materials, techniques, and aids - slide presentations, videos, podcasts, articles, case studies, tutorials, templates, and samples etc will be used. I forgot to mention, the course also includes 24 hours of hands on training in Microsoft Office Project Standard 2007.  The course design took me a month and it was quite a hectic job. (But I loved doing it!)

I have planned to give online support to the participants of the course. I have set up a blog, a youtube channel, facebook account, google reader, twitter, and google docs etc in addition to the course website for this purpose. In the process I have learned quite a lot. The blog will serve as the base for connecting all these. Any one, not a participant of the course, can benefit a lot from the resources as well for their self study endeavors in the field of project management . So stay tuned to the blog.

Formal classes of the course are starting on 26th February 2011. And, truly speaking, I am a bit nervous. I am quite confident about the course contents but am conscious about the actual delivery. Two batches, 12 hours of instruction per week besides my official duties, three hours of instruction to MPA students per week, responsibilities of house, I AM GETTING INTO A TOUGH TIME!!!

(THAT MEANS A DOUBLE OF TOUGH TIME TO THE PARTICIPANTS OF THE COURSE!!!)

All well wishers, PRAY FOR ME, PLEASE.
